The NSW and Federal Government, Transurban and the M7 Westlink shareholders are building the new NorthConnex. This is a tolled motorway which links the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills. The nine kilometre tunnel includes interchanges to the north and south to accommodate connections at either end of the project. When complete, NorthConnex will link Sydney’s north to the orbital network and form part of the National Highway route, diverting around 5,000 trucks off Pennant Hills Road daily.
Taylor was engaged by Lendlease Bouygues Construction Joint Venture to construct the Motorway Control Centre (MCC) building for the NorthConnex project. The centre is located above the tunnel at the southern interchange in West Pennant Hills. It comprises a two level office as well as a 33 space basement carpark and includes all structural, façade finishes, fitout, services and external work elements.
The MCC is a critical element of the entire project where 24 hour operational activities, incident and traffic management is to be controlled and monitored for the tunnel. This includes tunnel safety, ventilation, power, lighting and other safety road systems.
It is important to our client to minimise the impact of construction activities on the residents surrounding the work site. In addition, it is necessary that the MCC be delivered on time to ensure tunnel operations and management are underway prior to the completion of the tunnel and its public opening.
To achieve this, Taylor has scheduled works to occur within certain hours of the day to eliminate disturbance to surrounding residents and motorists after hours. Furthermore, the Taylor team has been parking offsite and commuting to the project via a NorthConnex bus to reduce the impact of congestion and traffic on residents around the site.
