The Australian Institute of Architects announce the shortlist for the prestigious 2020 NSW Architecture Awards.
We congratulate Bates Smart Architects, shortlisted in the Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing Category for the striking 39 level Boomerang Tower at the Sydney Olympic Park. The tower features a boomerang shaped design, architecturally created by Bates Smart Architects to achieve optimum solar orientation. This design ensures all apartments are north facing to gain 100% solar access whilst maximising views across the entire Sydney Basin.
We also commend Cox Architecture, shortlisted in the Sustainable Architecture Category for their work on the iconic Wildlife Retreat at Taronga Zoo. Part of the approach to achieve a 5-Star Greenstar outcome for the Retreat was for the accommodation pods to rely primarily on cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels for both the floor and wall structures. The pods encircle and overlook an open and accessible animal exhibit showcasing native Australian species.
Congratulations TKD Architects, shortlisted in the Education Category for their work on the Homebush West Public School. This unique project had provided new architectural and technological learning facilities targeting areas of urban growth and also involved one of New South Wales’ first multi-modal, outdoor learning and active play spaces for the students at Homebush West Public School.
Congratulations AJ+C Architects, shortlisted in the Urban Category for their work on the Cardinal Freeman Village at Ashfield. This project has become a benchmark for seniors living, creating up to 240 apartments, a 100 bed residential aged care facility and significant amount of open spaces integrated into a historic site.
In the current climate, the impact of shared spaces on our wellbeing and collective psyche is front of mind. We believe it is a great time to celebrate design excellence and the impact quality architecture has on our communities.
We are proud to have partnered with you on delivering these projects and wish you the best of luck in securing these awards.
