It was Mal Feebrey who introduced Daniel Philips to Taylor, more than five years ago. Mal was a catalyst for Taylor, and for New Start. “From the beginning, the focus for Taylor and New Start has been on doing good business.” said Daniel Phillips, “We are a commercial business, but I don’t like the word client, it’s a real partnership.”

Responsible for People, Culture & Training at Taylor, Mal was a passionate man who was driven by the desire to make each and every person he spoke to feel part of a community, feel that they belonged, and that they were loved and supported. He had a special ability to nurture people, he was always there to listen and help and for this he created bonds that would never be broken. Mal’s impact on others was so widespread, it could not be measured.

Together, Taylor and New Start forged a platform for grassroots participation, very much facilitated by Mal Feebrey’s caring and inclusive working style. Mal, an ordained minister, helped youths, adults and families experiencing hardship, and counselled those in prison. He brought empathy and compassion to people’s lives. Prior to his passing in 2018, Mal was responsible for developing cultural awareness initiatives at Taylor.

Taylor remain committed to working with New Start Australia, and other partners, to provide culturally safe and inclusive employment. We support this commitment with our unique pre-employment training and transition to work programmes, and by providing on-going mentoring and support to all Taylor team members and subcontractors. Our aim is to increase the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and their engagement across the organisation.

New Start Australia and Taylor have customised a pre-employment training program to motivate candidates to take the next step on the journey of life and equip them with all the tools needed when facing any obstacles or barriers in the future. Ready, Willing and Able is a four-day program targeted at entry level traineeship and returning to work applicants that has a clear focus on gaining long term sustainable employment. This unique program provides holistic personalised support for each candidate throughout their employment journey.

In collaboration with New Start and our Indigenous partners, Taylor conducts cultural awareness and sensitivity training for our people and our subcontractors. Taylor is incredibly proud of our strong record in achieving, and exceeding, project requirements and targets for Aboriginal participation.

NAIDOC Week 2020

Impacted by COVID, #NAIDOC Week has been postponed to 8-15 November 2020. This year’s theme Always Was Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.

In Daniel Phillips own words, “NAIDOC Week is a time of celebration, remembrance, acknowledgement, and reflection. It’s about everyone coming together and celebrating a beautiful culture.”

We join with others in acknowledging the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. And we look forward to NAIDOC celebrations in November.
