Greenwich Public School Upgrade

Greenwich Public School is undergoing upgrades to both the Kingslangley Road and Greenwich Road campuses as part of the NSW Government’s 2018/19 Budget for public education. Upon completion, the expanded school will deliver flexible learning spaces for up to 670 students with growth up to 1,000 students in the future.

Set in the hilltop slopes and backing onto the River Road intersection, the Kingslangley Road campus caters for students from years 2 to 6. Here, works will comprise 16 new teaching spaces with concept designs, a new library and an upgrade to several existing facilities including the canteen, hall and staff amenities. In addition, two existing teaching spaces will be converted to special program rooms.

The Greenwich Road site serves students from Kindergarten to year 1 and is situated in the quiet, leafy shopping strip which heads toward the Lane Cove River. Construction works will involve 8 new permanent teaching spaces with concept designs, large sliding doors and operable walls. There will also be upgrades to the administration building and conversion of two existing rooms into special program spaces.

Through the tender period, Taylor offered several cost savings, as follows:

• Redesigned the structural elements to utilise post tensioning;
• Provided alternative façade finishes which present the same aesthetics;
• Reconfigured the materials used externally such as using coloured concrete in lieu of the low strength resin bound gravel type;
• Amended the interior design to provide better acoustics whilst attaining a saving;
• Investigated options such as utilising under croft areas as storage in lieu of importing material to fill the site.

In addition to reducing costs, it is paramount that the school endures minimal disruption during construction works. To address this, the team have scheduled works over several key stages to mitigate the school’s exposure to construction. Furthermore, site entry points will be limited to reduce impact on the school’s normal activities.
