On Friday evening we tuned in to the 2020 Australian Institute and Building (AIB) Professional Excellence Awards for NSW and Hong Kong, which went virtual this year. These awards recognise individual building professionals who have demonstrated leadership and facilitated the on-time and on-budget delivery of construction projects.

Accolades for Professional Excellence and Commercial Construction

Congratulations to Adam Vassallo, Project Manager, for winning the prestigious Professional Excellence Award for leadership in the delivery of the unique and iconic Wildlife Retreat at Taronga Zoo.

The Wildlife Retreat at Taronga wraps around its own private native wildlife sanctuary nestled within the zoo. All guests are treated to the ultimate, immersive overnight conservation experience. The impressive project, aiming for 5 star Greenstar Rating, involved delivery of various high-quality facilities and tailored landscaping to create a natural yet luxurious atmosphere for all its guests. Accommodation includes 62 rooms across 5 Cross Laminated Timber buildings comprising between 2 and 4 storeys and connected by elevated walkways.

Adam will now represent Taylor in the National Awards.

The team also collected a well deserved Highly Commended in Commercial Construction ($50m+), for the successful delivery of the new BMW & Mini Sydney, a state-of-the-art motor dealership and service facility in Rushcutters Bay.

BMW & Mini Sydney is a complex, large-scale project. Not only was the design complicated, the construction of the structure, facade and fitout were intricate, involving detailed coordination with various building elements. Attention to detail was evident to meet design intent, structural requirements and compliance with relevant standards. As one of the largest dealership refurbishments in Sydney’s history, it sets a high precedent for future commercial developments of its kind.

Congratulations to Taylor team members Ben Langshaw, Pat Smith, and Ian Roxburgh for this outstanding result.

A special mention also goes to our experienced Senior Project Manager, Andrew Dudley, for his leadership in the delivery of the Knox Grammar Junior Academy and Performing Arts Centre. Also nominated by Taylor this year, we appreciate and highly commend Andrew’s efforts in delivering this exceptional project.

Congratulations to all involved.

This is Taylor’s second year entering these industry-recognised awards, having successfully brought home three awards in 2019 for the Haven Residential Development in Baulkham Hills, Institute of Science & Learning at Taronga Zoo and the Scott Street Commercial Offices in Liverpool.

Thank you to AIB for hosting an inspiring virtual Awards event, we look forward to tuning into the National Awards next month.

AIB NSW Committee Member elect

Taylor’s AIB Award wins coincide with the confirmation of Oliver Riordan, MAIB, as AIB NSW Committee Member elect, in October 2020. Oliver is a Hunter-based professional who completed his Bachelor of Construction Management Honours Degree at University of Newcastle in 2015 and has since developed a successful career at Taylor as a Senior Contract Administrator. He has worked with the Taylor team in Sydney for over six years and, more recently, with AIB Fellow and Taylor Hunter Business Development Manager, Trevor Nye, in Newcastle.

Congratulations to Oliver on his appointment.
