For 25 years we’ve been building the Taylor family and our growth and development as a company has also seen us recognised by our people as an Employer of Choice (2019) in the construction industry.
Mark Taylor’s philosophy for the business has always been that if we get the company culture right internally, then great relationships between our own people will ultimately cascade on to our Clients and our external partnerships. This, in turn, will enable the business to grow.
We have a culture calendar delivered throughout the year. This involves a broad range of engagement activities and celebrations, from team-building conferences, awards ceremonies, and subcontractor parties, to family Christmas picnics, charity events and monthly get togethers.
With a dispersed workforce, many live project sites across Sydney, and a 6-day working week for many of our team members, it can be extremely challenging to get the entire team together. This, however, is something that is important to us. Talking Taylor is a series of events throughout the year that are held off-site and in close proximity to the troops in the field. The purpose of these events is to celebrate as a team and keep everyone informed on the business outlook and current activity.
Tim Christie, our General Manager of Construction, has been with the business for over 8 years and loves the fact that the culture has a genuine family feel to it. Tim explains, ‘It’s not something that just happens, you have to work on it. We believe that it’s very important to connect with our staff on the social side, and the human side, to behave the same way both inside and outside the workplace. And this also reflects the way we hire for cultural fit.’
Part of our culture is giving back and supporting the community. Taylor has been a major sponsor of Property Industry Foundation over 10 years. Tim is part of the Property Industry Foundation committee and Taylor supports many events throughout the year, raising funds to support homeless youth.
We also look for ways to support our Clients and their businesses. We host an annual charity golf day where we get together with our subcontractors to fundraise for charities such as NeuRA, Taronga Conservation Society and their Indigenous youth program, JDRF, and Sporting Chance for Children’s cancer. Our team love to participate and get involved.
We focus on our relationships, both internally and externally. Our key suppliers and subcontractors are an integral part of our business and, at the end of each year, we host a Subcontractor Christmas Party where we get everyone together to say ‘Thank you’ and celebrate the achievements of the year.
Tim describes Taylor as, “A company that is always wanting to do better. We are not a turnover driven business, we seek iconic and interesting opportunities like our Taronga Zoo projects, the Sydney Opera House, and the PolAir Facility at Bankstown. It’s the diversity of our projects that is really rewarding and great for our team. Great projects keeps them interested and challenged.”
Tim says to anyone wanting to join the business, “We’re always delivering projects that benefit the community; Schools, Health and Aged Care, Community and Public buildings, key Industrial sites. These types of projects are extremely motivating and they help our people grow.”
Career progression and promoting people from within is important to Taylor, with many apprentices and cadets coming through the ranks and now leading teams in all streams of the business. Our people are our biggest asset and the success of our team members is as important as the success of the business.
Leadership, accountability and initiative are encouraged and rewarded at Taylor.
