One of the Lower North Shore’s most iconic heritage-listed mansions – Burnham Thorpe – has undergone a meticulous make-over to become several luxury homes for seniors, following an ambitious six-year redevelopment of Lady Gowrie Village, of which it is part.
As part of the redevelopment, the restored and renovated Mediterranean-style mansion is at the heart of the newly named, Gordon Quarter: the new look, reimagined retirement village on Edward Street, that is now open and welcoming new residents from the local community.

Residents can now enjoy the serene tranquillity of natural bushland – with local cafes, markets and retail all within an easy stroll of the new development that includes the stunning interwar mansion, 40 purpose-designed retirement living units, and a brand-new 107 room Roden Cutler Lodge residential aged care home.
For over 100 years, Anglicare has been servicing people in need within local communities. Gordon Quarter’s redevelopment has established Anglicare’s footprint on Sydney’s exclusive Lower North Shore, enhancing its history and reputation as a provider of aged care and retirement living.
Working closely with Anglicare and Allen Jack+Cottier Architects, Team Taylor brought the state-of-the-art aged care facility to life, in addition to spacious common areas, beautifully landscaped gardens and terraces, staff facilities and associated carparking. Gordon Quarter also features new community facilities including a Café, snooker room, wine cellar, and outdoor BBQ areas.
Respecting the history and heritage of the existing Burnham Thorpe building was a significant component of this project. By collaborating with the local community, the Taylor team maximised every opportunity to protect and enhance existing architecture, as well as maintain fauna and flora DA requirements. The village also features environmentally sustainable design elements including natural light and ventilation, energy- and water-wise fittings, rooftop solar power, and rainwater harvesting.
