Taylor Celebrates NAIDOC Week 2023

Celebrations were held at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility in Australia's newest city - Bradfield.

On Wednesday 5 July 2023, Taylor celebrated NAIDOC Week 2023 by hosting a unique cultural event at the First Building in Australia’s newest city – Bradfield City Centre.

With the theme for NAIDOC Week 2023 ‘For Our Elders’, the event acknowledged the important role our Elders have played, and continue to play in our communities and families. AMRF is located on Dharug Country, with connection to Country a vital element of the buildings design. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding natural waterways and Cumberland Plains, the building’s open and welcoming architectural expression reflects the fluidity of the landscape and connects the building to the deep history of Country.

The event was led by Bernadette Hardy, a proud Gamilaraay and Dharug spatial designer and cultural researcher who was engaged as a sub-consultant in the design process of the AMRF project. The event began with a walk-through Country, where guests gathered at the Eucalyptus Tereticornis Tree on the outskirts of the site. A unique cultural event, the Tree brought us together to join in an authentic experience, as the Tree is symbol of our Elders and nature’s wisdom. Drawing strength and cultural knowledge from our Elders, each guest placed their ochre handprints on the Tree as a commitment to honour and protect the children of the Tree.

As a business, once the tools are down, we commit to ensuring our connection to Country continues beyond the project completion. Thank you to Bernadette for her guidance and invitation to join an annual yarning circle. Thank you to our speakers Adam Towner (Head of New Business for Taylor), Jessica Herder (Manager of First Nations Outcomes for Western Sydney Parkland Authority), Peter Hogan (Director of Capital Projects for NSW Public Works), and our AMRF Site Team. We look forward to our continued relationship on this project and through our yarning circle as we learn more about the land’s story and our Elders.

The event concluded with a light morning tea provided by Indigenous catering company Goanna Hut, as we overlooked construction activity happening on-site.
